Structural Insulated Panels – (SIP)
SIPs panels are structural engineered insulated panels that have been used in construction for many years starting back in America in the 1950’s, following later in the UK. Of late these panels have continued to increase in popularity as construction companies are continually driven by building regulators to produce economic thermally efficient buildings.
The panels consist of an insulating foam core bonded under high pressure between two, oriented strand boards (OSB) in factory conditions. This produces an extremely strong energy efficient cost-effective method of construction.
SIPs builds are known to be at least 50% more energy efficient than traditional timber frame buildings. Due to the manner the SIP building is constructed using insulated splines to join the panels leads to lessen thermal bridging and better airtightness.
They also greatly increase the speed at which a building can be constructed due to the lighter weight. As the building is lighter it also reduces the foundation cost on ground screws.
